CAREER SUCCESS GUIDE November 2008 | Dear Jsidufh, Over the past few emails, I've provided information about how to begin working on your Career Vision. Within the structure of my coaching, I refer to what we most want to achieve as our Career Vision. Your Career Vision provides clarity when you get up early on Monday morning to start another week in your job. It helps to keep us on track. During tough times (as we face today), it's even more important to maintain focus and continue to check that your career goals are on track. But what happens when external forces seem to be creating obstacles in your vision. What happens when you face uncertainty in the workplace? Recently, I worked with a client who contacted me to assist with re-designing his resume and personal brand. He was not unemployed, or even in any danger of losing his current contracts. However, through various cues, he just knew that the timing was right to test the job market and begin positioning his skill sets for new opportunities. He relied on his instincts - - as well as a few comments he received from someone in his network. During tough times, your network should serve as a source for short- and long-term career planning. It's a source of continuity and familiarity and reciprocity when the workplace climate becomes arbitrary and disconnected and unfair. If you've developed your network correctly, then it should be comprised of acquaintances, business associates, and friends who can help you achieve your Career Vision. "Are you trying to achieve something great? Do people doubt you'll ever reach it? If the answer is yes to both questions, then you're on the right path." - Pamela Watson
Successful Resume Writing & Job Interview Tips How many people enjoy writing a resume? Not many. And what about job interviewing? Again, not many. Job interviews can make you feel uncomfortable because interviews are designed to treat you as if you're a product that needs to be checked out like the tire of a new car. Secondly, resume writing is tough because it serves as a marketing tool - - an advertisement of who you are. Through my survey of job seekers, the majority have clearly indicated that the toughest part about job searching is writing a resume and interviewing. What if the hiring company, or interviewer, doesn't buy what you're marketing or selling? Here are my top 5 tips for creating a "success story resume" and exuding confidence in the interview: ________________________________________________________________________ Have You Created a Career Vision that will help you in your job search or career? If you're currently devoting 30 minutes a day to searching for a new position, then it's important to evaluate if this daily plan is generating results for you. I recommend increasing the time spent managing job search activities on a day to day basis. So, 30 minutes can be increased to 1 1/2 hours and you should begin to see some qualitative results. Speaking of results, keep in mind that if you don't track the results you achieve from certain activities (how you network, where you send your resume, whom you call, etc.), then you may be spinning wheels unnecessarily. Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of your daily plan so that you can reach a successful outcome.... a new position. Here's one more tip: If you're currently searching for a new position, request an affordable job search & interviewing skills assessment. After a professional review of your resume and job search plans, you will receive a 60+ page booklet filled with recommendations and strategies to help improve your resume, your job interview skills, and your overall success within your personal job search. Rather than spend money for a generic book on this topic, you deserve to receive customized and affordable advice designed to help you find a new opportunity. Best wishes to you and your career success! | Sincerely, "Career E-Consultant" Beacon Career Management, LLC 1-800-758-9747, ext. 2 POB 1271 Hightstown, NJ 08520 | | |
