Happy New Year Isodifj!

How were your holidays? I hope you were able to take some quality time off. Both my hubby and I took about two weeks. I value the break so much more now that the Vaughnerator's in the picture. Here's a recent photo of him right before our trip to Florida over the holidays (he's gonna be mad about this when he's older!):

I say quality time because I think so many of us have forgotten how to truly relax and kick back. It's harder to really get away these days because of crackberry's and technology that allows us to be accessible 24/7. But you can still do it. Make a resolution this year to take some time off, away from anything that can distract you.

Create another resolution this year to identify your ideal career - no more excuses!! See the tough economy as an opportunity to find something you truly enjoy. In this month's Career Corner I give you the secret ingredient to identifying your ideal career and a bonus audio from my Las Vegas radio interview in December about being laid off: "8 Tips to Pumping Up Your Job Search." In Check it Out you'll notice there's a $50 coupon off my Identifying Your Ideal Career Path Coaching Group. The Personal Note & Life Lesson this month is based on an inspirational quote I LOVE about not settling for less in your life; it's a good one, check it out.

January Freebie: Our first two freebies for the year are:

1. Your New Year's Resolution Worksheet.
2. A great Time Management Article from my colleague Michael Charest.

See you next month! Here's to having a career you love,

Hallie Crawford

Personal Note & Life Lesson

New Year's Resolutions - Make 'em Stick!

Have you written your New Year's Resolutions? I'm working on mine, and updating my Vision Board, as we speak.

I encourage you to use the goal setting worksheet above to set your resolutions. When you're setting goals, it's important to create a structure for doing so and to write them down. Remember it's not real until it's in writing!! A big reason to set goals in the first place is to create the life you want right?! At the end of your life do you want to say you tried to achieve what you want or that you didn't try at all? You know the right answer... My client Mike shared this quote with me recently, I love it.

"The greatest impediment to great life is a good life."

Tack this up on your bedroom mirror to remind you to stay focused on your goals. The photo on the right hand side is the binder cover my client Cassie created for our coaching materials. It's full of cool inspirational quotes so I wanted to share it with you. Feel free to print this out and use it for motivation to achieve your goals this year!

Getting Your Transition Started: Dream First, Dream Big (excerpted from Flying Solo: Career Transition tips for singles)

You know the traditional image of the American Dream: Work hard and you can have anything you want, regardless of where you came from, your socio-economic status or any other aspect of your life. Well, the American Dream has changed, and the traditional way to pursue that dream is quite different. No longer is there just one "work hard" ethic to achieve the American Dream. And, it's no longer about sticking to one career path for the rest of your life.

As a single person you have even more freedom to set up your career, to break the mold, and figure out what will work for you. The process of "Dreaming First" will help you stay outside the box and think creatively about your career transition.

Why dream first? Why turn to the fanciful side of your brain when everyone keeps telling you that a practical plan is the key to success? Because it works. While a practical plan is one of the strongest keys to success, the best-laid plans always start with the dream--a dream that you can trim and shape later to fit your real-life situation.

One way to dream BIG is to use the technique of visualization.

Envision how you want your career transition to unfold, visualize the pieces you want to have in place to make it happen and "see" all the players you need to support you along the way. When you develop your vision first, you will not only become clearer about what you want to happen, you will also be more likely to make it happen in the way you've envisioned it, and therefore be successful.

Dreaming First enables you to brainstorm as many possibilities as you can imagine for living out your dream, and therefore, enables you to identify many more ways to make it happen.

Transitioning? How to Use Your Time Well

By Miriam Salpeter

If you are in the midst of a career transition, it's easy to let hours, days and weeks pass by before setting up a strategy that will help you succeed in your  hunt. (Hiring a coach can give your search a turbo boost!)

Volunteering is one great way to use your free time. Here are a few additional tips to consider if you want to propel your plans forward:

If you haven't started, dive into social media and Web 2.0 applications! Yes, this can take some time if you are going to do it full force. But, you have time, so go for it! Start searching for blogs in your niche. Guy Kawasaki's Alltop list is a perfect place to find blogs in an array of topics, but you can certainly use Google to find current information in your field of interest. Spend some time researching and exploring. See if you can identify the stars in your field. Use online mechanisms to connect to them!

How? Post smart comments on their blogs. See if they use Twitter and follow them. Make sure that you are using LinkedIn effectively. You may be amazed at how quickly you can connect and "befriend" people online.

Consider authoring a blog. If you are a strong writer, there isn't a better way to influence your Google rankings and demonstrate authority in your subject matter. If you have the time, why not try? You have nothing to lose.

Stop and think about what you really want to do. Use your time to assess yourself, your goals and plans for the future. How often are we forced to take a moment to really think about the future? This is your chance. Do you like the way your life is going? Are you happy with your path? If not, consider a coach to help you figure out a new direction.

Hallie Recommends

I recommended the Introvert Advantage yet again to another client this week. This book comes up frequently in my coaching sessions with clients who are introverted--and they love it! I've had so many people talk about how much it has helped them.

The Introvert Advantage is a great resource for introverts with tips on how to be successful in a society that tends to favor extroverts, which American society tends to do. We frequently hear the sayings, "She's such a go-getter, the self-made man, get out there and pound the pavement" when looking for a new job. Introverts typically aren't perceived as out there and go-getters. They tend to work their magic in more subtle ways. This book about being an introvert helps you learn how to use being introverted to your advantage and how to better relate to the extroverts in your life.
