They believe people are checked out, not paying attention to work and may not give them the time of day. This isn't accurate across the board and if you buy into it, you could be missing some critical networking time. Don't throw in the towel according to Forbes.com. The holidays can be a great opportunity for you to connect with people who might be able to help you with your job search, new business, career performance -- even clarifying your career direction. They can be a great excuse to reach out to everyone in your network one more time to remind them of your goals. Let them know what you need and wish them a happy holiday. Thank them for their time so far. This is time well spent; cultivating your network is critical during a career transition. And with so many workers unhappy with their career direction, finding your dream job is that much more important these days. (A 2007 Towers Perrin survey of nearly 90,000 employees worldwide, found that only 21% felt fully engaged at work and nearly 40% were disenchanted or disengaged.) So if your goal is to identify your ideal career for example, take advantage of the down time during the holidays. Schedule a coffee or phone call, ask them questions like: What do you like and dislike about what you do? What advice can you give me on finding a career? Do you know anyone in X industry? And if so can you help me set up an informational interview with that person? (These questions by the way, can apply to job searching and any career transition as well, just tweak as appropriate.) The holidays are a great time to pick up your career search, not slow down. This article in Forbes discusses some of the benefits the holidays can have for job searching / networking. Here is an excerpt: Network. Recognize that this is one of the best networking times of the year, as the holidays can make people more relaxed, open and generous. For those who are working, the holidays may be a somewhat slower period, which translates into more time they have to help you. Be visible. Take advantage of holiday parties and other gatherings to be visible. Your message is a positive one: You've got great skills and abilities and are excited to be looking for a new opportunity to use them. And if you're not excited, say you are anyway as it motivates others to help you. Send cards. Use e-cards as an easy way to connect or reconnect with your network. In addition to wishing your friends a good holiday, you can update them that your job search is going well, but that you're still looking for a position that uses your talents. *If you need help with identifying your ideal career, contact us for a complimentary consultation.* "One of the best things I ever did for my brother was buy him Hallie's service as a gift..." ~Scott, Boston, MA read more testimonials here If you'd like to use these tips in your newsletter or website click here for guidelines.
