Hi Isodifj,

Spring is on the way! March is one of my favorite months because the flowers are starting to bloom in Atlanta, it's warming up, and it's my birthday month. Last week we sent out an email about a birthday sale on one of our most popular products-our Ideal Career Workbook at $200 off. I hope this offer helps you by enabling you to purchase the program we use with all of our clients - at a much lower rate. Thank you to everyone who sent me birthday wishes last week and kudos on our newsletter. It's a pleasure to help you with your career goals.

I was honored to speak recently at Agnes Scott College about tapping into the hidden job market to find your dream job. We talked about how critical networking is, not only to your job search, but also to helping you clarify your career direction. Use networking as a tool for both of these objectives-it's not just for finding a job but also for learning about industries you're interested in.

This month is about how to transition into your dream job. Our Career Corner article Stop Talking Business When You're Networking gives you critical networking advice when you're in your job search. Our free report Take Control of Your Career Transition will help you get back in the driver's seat with your job search.

Stop Talking Business When You're Networking

I recently attended “The Introverted Leader” half day workshop with Jennifer Kahnweiler. Jennifer was impressive. In her book, The Introverted Leader, she interviewed 100 introverted leaders to learn the secrets to their success in a society/workplace that tends to favor extroverts. She asked them how they built upon their quiet strength to be successful. To learn more of her tips and secrets visit her blog.

One interesting thing I wanted to share from the workshop was about how people connect best on a personal, not business level. When you are networking, it is best to use a personal connection as a first step when you network, and then get into talking shop after the connection has been established.

Here's how it works:

When you are preparing for your next networking event, think of some personal things you've done lately that might be interesting to someone else. Have you seen a great movie, gone to a new art exhibit, taken a wonderful vacation? Whatever it is, make a mental note of a few things. Then, strike up a conversation at the event centered first around some common personal ground you share with the person you're talking to. Talk shop after that.

Remember: Statistics show that 70% of job seekers landed their jobs through networking! The hidden job market is the best way to find a job. So prepare in advance for your next networking event. How can you connect with the people there personally? Get out there and network this week. Stop talking shop and focus on establishing rapport with people.

The great news about career networking is that the more you do it, the easier it gets. Scan your local paper for networking opportunities; association meetings, church groups... I even had a client attend a football party at a bar for his favorite team. He left there with the name of a contact who sent him 10 job openings that same night after the party! Show up at a few of these events where you share a common interest with others, where you won't feel so pressured. Practice your conversation skills. Then, when a really big career networking opportunity comes along, you'll be ready to rock and roll.
