Hello Isodifj!

Summer is coming! …to Atlanta at least, it’s very warm here already. We had a nice Easter weekend in FL and Vaughn had a second Easter egg hunt at my mom’s house as well – lucky boy. Here’s a pic of the 2 of them. Other summer news, I’m thrilled to be partnering with the Georgia Tech Alumni Association in June to provide a career direction Intensive Coaching Program. If you know anyone who’s a Tech alum, please let them know!

In This Issue: Our Career Corner article explains why networking is not an optional action item in your search – it’s an absolute must. You can’t just sit behind your computer sending in resumes online. Stats show that most people get jobs by leveraging the hidden job market, which includes networking!

Client Success Story:  I spoke with my career coaching client Andrea recently and was thrilled to hear she got the raise and promotion we prepped her for in her recent performance review. It was a 25% raise! The highest raise in her company for that quarter. In her words, she said she was more confident in her review then she would've been before. She got almost everything she wanted out of her review, and clearly knows what she needs to do to move up in her organization in the long run! She actually felt she was more confident in the meeting than her boss was :) Rock on!

Graduation is just around the corner - Start networking now!

Networking is still one of the greatest ways for anyone to find a job. With graduation season approaching, there’s no better time than now for grads to start brushing up on their networking skills.

Resumes from referrals tend to land at the top of the applications stack and are typically reviewed first. Whether it’s you or a loved one who is getting ready for graduation day, it’s time for grads to find their own way in the working world. Here are some quick tips to help recent graduates network in a group or one-on-one setting:

Be clear. You need to get to the point of what you are looking for. What kind of job or opportunity do you want? You need to be able to keep it short and sweet so you can communicate it easily.

Rehearse. You need to have your ten-minute elevator speech ready at a moment’s notice. You never know when or where the opportunity will arise; when you will meet someone and need to get right into the details of your search. Spending idle time stumbling over words will leave a bad impression and give the idea that you are not serious about your job search.

Tell everyone that you are looking. Leave no stone unturned. This includes friends, family, fellow or former classmates – even current or past professors. You never know who might know someone in the field in which you are interested.

Don’t be shy. Now is not the time to be reserved in asking for help. Instead, graduates should step up and ask for referrals. If the people you are speaking with enjoy what they are doing, they are usually more than happy to lend a helping hand and offer suggestions or recommendations. Be sure to keep the message short and concise. Just go for it! After all, the worst that can happen is that you get a no. Remember… nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Follow-up: Follow up with the referral offered and the person who provided it. And then…follow up again. People are busy and may need a few reminders before getting back with you. You should continue follow up calls, as long as you are not bombarding the contact with constant messages. Also be sure to send a hand-written thank you note to the person who helped.

And most importantly, remember that this can be a lengthy process. You have to maintain a positive attitude and to be true to yourself!
