Hello Isodifj!

Spring is on it's way! We've had a few gorgeous 70 degree days here in Atlanta and I'm ready for more. I had a blast at the Academic Event Professionals Conference several weeks ago (photo). We've posted several YouTube videos excerpted from my presentation on Career Planning if you'd like to learn from those here.

Our Vanderbilt Career Intensive started last week. And I am honored to be speaking at Georgia State this week to students attending their leadership development conference.

Do I Really Have to Be Passionate?

I was working with a coaching client, Dan in New Hampshire, last week and this question or issue came up again... You hear it all the time, "Follow your passion and the money will follow," "Find your passion," "Identify something you're passionate about and do it!" But what if we don't feel passionate about anything?

If that word passion doesn't resonate with us or we don't have anything we can think of we feel that strongly about? This happens to many of us and -- there's nothing wrong with it! Some people are more emotive than others. Some personality types are just naturally more intense than others. I'll tell you what I told this client. There is no right or wrong here, it's all about what works for you.

First, replace the word passion with something else that feels true to you. Is it enjoyment, satisfaction, fulfillment? Whatever it is - take the pressure off feeling passionate and use language that works for you. Give yourself a break.

Next, using that new language whatever it is, think about what falls into that category for you. It can be anything from work to personal, related to family, friends or not related to people at all. What things give you that sense of satisfaction? And are those things clues to possible career paths? Think about why you enjoy those things and what it is about for you. Is it the creativity? The tangible result you see and therefore feel rewarded? Or the impact on others when you perform that task? Write down anything that comes to mind about those tasks or experiences and mine for possible career paths but also elements that you would want to incorporate into an ideal job as well.

Then - prioritize those. That will help you determine what is most important to you out of that list, and it will give you the sense of what you enjoy/feel satisfied by the most (as opposed to passionate). Check out this YouTube video I created on this topic and if you have to, throw away the idea of passion - and look for what's right for you.
