Here's to having a career you love, Hallie Crawford Personal Note & Life Lesson Just can't get it together?...5 Quick Time Management Tips Summer’s almost over. Kids are going back to school and work starts to pick up again. It’s time to get organized! When you’re feeling overwhelmed by your extra long to do list and don’t know where to start, here’s an easy checklist that you can use to separate and organize your long list of tasks effectively. I use this with my clients when they’re struggling with time management during their career transition. -
Step One: Make a list of everything you have on your plate to do, for today, tomorrow, even the month ahead. It’s ok if it’s long. -
Step Two: Prioritize your list based on what’s urgent and what isn’t. -
Step Three: Break it down into manageable chunks by categorizing each task. Decide what you can - Delegate
- Say no to
- Say yes to (like saying yes to getting help cleaning your garage, finding a babysitter for help with your kids, etc)
- Put off until later – schedule tasks for later in the month or year if they’re not urgent.
-
Step Four: Categorize your tasks like this every week to keep your list manageable. -
Step Five: Place these categories somewhere accessible. I keep this list in a folder on my desk that's always there when I need it. Tuesday, October 28, 2008 JCI Atlanta, the young professionals arm of the Atlanta Jaycees Career Corner How to Successfully Navigate the Path to Career Fulfillment Many of my career coaching clients ask me, what's the best way to successfully navigate your career transition? How will I go after my dream while taking care of my needs at the same time? Here are some tips you need to successfully navigate your path to career fulfillment: -
Realize it’s a process. Realize that career transition is a process that can take some time. Be willing to be patient with it, and with yourself. -
Develop a transition plan. Before you can move past the point of vague possibilities and enter the throes of a serious career change, you MUST develop a plan so you are covered in the financial, mental, and emotional aspects of your life and your future. -
Set goals. When the time comes to set goals... make sure they are specific, tangible, measurable and include a time frame. Your goals should be realistic, and also a stretch so you're pushing yourself beyond what you'd normally do in order to move forward. -
Take care of yourself. Transition can be stressful. Make sure you take care of yourself. Physical exercise, eating right, getting enough sleep and maintaining balance in your life are all things to attend to when you're navigating an adjustment in your life. -
Remain or become financially stable. It's hard to dream and plan for the future when you're worried about paying the bills. What are your options for becoming financially stable? Perhaps you can stay in your current position and work on the next career step after hours, or find a part-time job that pays the bills and allows you greater freedom to pursue your passion. -
Dream first. While financial stability is the foundation of your future, you also need to do some dreaming. Once you have a plan to meet your basic financial needs, it's time to take off your Practical Hat, put on your Dreaming Glasses – and dream big. -
Share your dream or plans with those who’ll be supportive. If there are people in your life who tend to be negative, wait a little while to tell them your dream. Sometimes holding back until you're really solid in your dream is the best way to go. Share it with people who are going to be positive and supportive... who'll inspire and encourage you. Special Career Corner for Young Professionals & Recent College Grads How to Make the Most of Your Career Networking Opportunities Are you just out of college, or have you been working for a little while but haven't quite found your career niche yet? If so, then you're probably no stranger to the Career Fairs or other networking events that everyone always seems to be talking up. Are they worth it? Should you keep at it? What should you do at these events to help make a stronger impression? Here are some tips to make the most of these events: -
Get clear on what you're looking for. What kind of job or opportunity do you want? Keep it short and sweet so you can communicate it easily. Practice that as your "elevator speech" for meeting new potential employers or future colleagues. -
Tell everyone you're looking. This includes friends, family, fellow students – even professors. You never know who might know someone in the field you're interested in. Keep your resume updated and your business card handy if you have one, so that when an opportunity arises you can easily pass this information along. -
Don't be shy - ask for the referral. People are usually happy to help - and the worst they can say is no. Remember... nothing ventured, nothing gained. Ask for that letter of recommendation or testimonial. Have a list of names handy to write in the "referrals" spot of your job applications - and be sure to keep their phone numbers and email addresses up to date and on file. -
Follow up. If someone refers you to someone who lands you paid work, a temp gig or especially a full-time job, don't forget to thank the referrer with a hand-written note of appreciation. Keep them in mind as someone whom you may want to do something nice for in the future. -
Most importantly, be yourself. You want a job that suits your style, personality, and unique skill set... right? The best way to find one is to just put it out there and see what comes back.
