I had 2 speaking engagements recently and the hot topic of course is the economy and what it means for your career search. Here's a question I came across recently from The Pathfinder: "Are you going to design your future, or is your past going to keep doing it for you?" GREAT question, what's your response? In the same line of thinking "Are you going to let the current economy stand in the way of identifying your ideal career?" You know the right answer... Remember, you can't always control external circumstances but you can control your reaction to them. You get to choose - Are you going to let past fears, beliefs or negative thoughts decide your future? Here's a new perspective for you on this tougher economy and what it means for your job search: You can see this as an obstacle that will keep you stuck, or an opportunity to take the time to identify your ideal job. If you've lost your job and have no other income, of course, find another job/source of income right away. You have to pay your bills; that goes without saying. But you can also see losing your job or the tougher economy as a chance to assess where you are in your career path and identify what you are passionate about. There's nothing like tougher times to help us focus on what's really important. Take a stand for your future. Get in touch with me if you're ready to blast off. Articles I was thrilled to provide information for the The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: "Learn how to overcome the ache of unemployment" The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - November 9, 2008 Career Corner Social Networking - Who You Know is as Important as What You Know By Miriam Salpeter Pounding the pavement for a new job? Be sure to take advantage of social/online networking! Twitter.com is a social network that quickly and easily connects you to other professionals in your field for networking and job hunting. As a regular Twitter user, I have become a big fan of the micro-blogging platform that invites you to share thoughts in pithy, 140-character blasts. (If you've never heard about Twitter, commoncraft.com has a great video to watch!) I admit, before I found a niche of people to "follow" on Twitter - I thought it was a big waste of time. Once I got over the fact that so many people share information about what they are eating, I realized that if I "followed" the right people, I would be "in the loop" on key topical information. Twitter is also a wonderful way to form new connections. Three reasons why you should use Twitter for your job hunt: Get Connected. Twitter is a great place to introduce someone or to get introduced in an informal way. You can learn who is talking to whom in your field and choose to "follow" people who are "in the know." Personal Branding. Twitter is a great way to establish and differentiate yourself from the crowd. By sharing professional information along with just the right amount of personality, you strengthen your brand. The result? Those who "meet" (and like) you will become part of your network. Look for a Job. Twitter is the perfect place to create exposure and build credibility in your industry. Many people have found jobs as a result of Twitter. With some effort, you can leverage this great tool for your job hunt! If you already know your ideal career path and are ready to amp your job search, don't go it alone! Special Career Corner for Young Professionals & Recent College Grads Career Advice for the College Grad and Boomerang Generation Are you a member of the Boomerang Generation? You are if you were born between 1977 and 1989. It's called the "boomerang" because many young people of this generation went off to college, graduated, and ended up back home with Mom and Dad. If you are among this group, know that it's okay to lean on your parents for at least a little while as you get your career bearings. Five tips to get you on the right career track: 1) Get out there The ideal job doesn't land in your lap. You've got to get out of the house and pound the pavement (or the virtual pavement as the case may be). Did you know that many first jobs are obtained through referrals (people you know, friends of friends)? Learn to be a career networker. 2) Get experience You may think that a college degree is enough to land a job. But since everyone has a degree these days, employers are looking for more. They want to see experience. The best way to get it is with an internship in your field. The next best thing is to get some office or business experience, in any field. 3) Be positive and persistent Don't let obstacles hold you back. Work on maintaining a positive attitude, about yourself and what you can accomplish. Everyone fails sometimes - but that's okay, because failure is only temporary. The key is how you handle failure, by getting back up and trying again. 4) Learn to overcome obstacles If you don't land the first job you go for, don't let it get you down. Disappointment is part of life. Everyone goes through it, and gets past it on their way to bigger and better things. 5) Be pro-active and take charge of your own life Make a plan of action for your job search, complete with goals, deadlines and action steps.
