Are You Living Your Success Story?

CAREER SUCCESS GUIDE
March 2009
Dear Jsidufh,

Are You Living Your Success Story?  Do you know how to live each day based on a clear vision or goal?  I've spoken with a number of people who believe that, due to the recession and high unemployment rates, it's necessary to change their career direction and vision.  In my opinion, it's important to consistently assess your short term goals during difficult times;  however, your career goal - - or the vision you have created for your work life - - should still serve as a guidepost for your travels.  Your career vision should continue to provide the direction towards your career success.

Below is a personal "Career Success Story" that one of our subscribers would like to share with everyone.  Enjoy.... and send me whatever comments you may have.

If the answer is yes to both questions, then you're on the right path."

 "My Career Success Story"
  by Russel Cook

I don't know if this is a success story, but it's certainly something to fit the times.  I graduated from college in 1974 during a recession. My degree in sociology was the last "skill" the world seemed to need.  I can remember a professor saying that college provided an education, not a job. And so, despite marriage plans, the big career moment did not come and I continued driving a local delivery truck in a small business.  The lesson at that job was simple:  customer service.  You worked till all the orders were delivered.  When there was extra to be done, it meant an earlier start with breakfast first and the owner picking up the check.  Busy times meant the boss came out of the office and onto the floor to put together orders and load trucks.  On hot days he bought ice cream, and on cold days plenty of coffee.  No customer went without service, no worker was not part of the team.

I finally did get a job because of the recession.  Additional federal dollars were provided to the state department of labor to administer extended unemployment and to help people find jobs (particularly the Vietnam veterans who suffered from a higher than the already staggering unemployment rate).  The government provided money for emergency heating and shelter projects, which actually were initiated when a glass manufacturing plant was shut due to natural gas shortage.  Promotions came and so did my first reduction in force, with the state losing federal funds an programs being cut.

I used my experience in finding people jobs to land a position staffing up a new manufacturing line.  I had an opportunity to work in a union environment and learned contract administration.  When the plant was closed, my contacts with the state Office of Customized Training made the transition easy for the workforce union & me, since I used the career transition center I founded  to land my next job.

After 13 years in the electrical power industry, I  became more involved in Labor Relations. Thirteen years later, I started another career transition center, and used my former experience to negotiate a contract to wind down the operation  which was being sold due to deregulation.

Another career change and an HR Director position turned into a Vice Presidents role  with a growing telecommunications firm.  The latest  economic challenge has caused reorganizations, but fortunately some good fiscal management has limited the job loss.  But, the cycle remains. Lessons will be learned and pain will turn to change and change to opportunity.  Look for it, remember all you have learned, and grow with it.

Article:  The Power of Visualizing Success
by Timothy Millet, Director, Training & Development, i perform

It may seem odd at first to consider the power of visualising success along with creative tension, but they go hand-in-hand in an effective organisation. Creative tension is inspired thinking that goes beyond the current comfort level and often leads to new ideas, goals, and expectations. Success is the actual achievement of those goals.

When you combine the creative tension with the visualisation of success what is created is an environment which is exceptionally motivating and energizing. It is out of these kinds of environments you see leaders emerge. The location is not important. The environment is the most important. If location alone was all that determined success, Apple computers would not exist because the garage location where the idea was born would have limited the vision of success.
