What you discover could be very revealing! Career Corner How college graduates can find career direction It’s that time of year. College graduates all across the country are proudly walking across the stage at graduation. Unfortunately, many of them have no idea what they want to do job-wise. Here are some of the things I ask my clients who are college graduates to consider, in order to move beyond the fear of the unknown and towards defining what they want to do long term. First, I ask them to self-reflect. You have to get to know yourself and think about what makes you tick. For example, what were some of your favorite courses in college and why? Who were your favorite professors and why? Looking for themes between classes can help you identify passions and interests, as well as looking at professors and what you admired about them. These things can help identify qualities or personal traits that you want to emulate for greater success. By the way, don't forget that professors can be great networking contacts in the future. Second, I help them determine what is most important to them in their career. You can do this by identifying your career values, thinking about your priorities and what would be most important for you to have in a career. Start by making a list of the top 5 things you want to have in a job. Third, I help them look at outside interests in school as well. Sororities, clubs you have joined, or outside social activities can tell a lot about your talents and skills. Don't overlook these experiences when trying to identify what your skill set is. Finally, I ask them to work on envisioning themselves in the future. This can help motivate and inspire you towards finding your dream job as well as determining a direction. Both are critical at this point, because graduates can understandably become frozen in indecision and stress when they don’t have any direction. It’s imperative that you move into taking action as quickly as possible to move past that. *Would you like more help with your career direction?
