Client Story to Help You Create Your Own I received this email from a former client who was in job search mode for several months. You'll see below she has found a job in her former industry while she's still pursuing the dream job. Life is a journey and sometimes the timeline doesn't meet our standards. But we have to keep pursuing the right career fit, no matter how long it takes, knowing that at the end we'd rather say we tried and failed instead of we didn't try at all. There can be several steps between where you are now and your dream job. Please know that this is normal and it's all worth it in the end. "Hi Hallie... I started my new job. I FINALLY got a job in my field, I am doing direct mail production in Baltimore and I like it. Once I catch my breath, I want to look back into meeting planning coursework. Many people still don’t understand how important it is in their job search and for ongoing career development as a networking tool. Even if you are not in the market for a new job, LinkedIn enables you to connect with people within your industry anywhere, in order to stay on top of trends, leverage your connections as resources for your career development, and more. I always tell my career coaching clients that LinkedIn is no longer optional. Recruiters and employers report that up to 80% of their recruiting is done through LinkedIn. And here’s the deal - you can’t just stop once you’ve set up your LinkedIn profile. You have to make sure that you are actively connecting with people and updating your profile regularly in order to leverage LinkedIn. Here are 5 things you need to do and keep in mind in order to use LinkedIn effectively… 1. Informational interviews: I asked my career coaching client in Chicago, Lisa, if she could identify a potential connection for an informational interview for her job search. One person she chose was a woman in one of her industry specific LinkedIn groups. Because of their mutual participation in the LinkedIn group, Lisa felt comfortable reaching out to her. The woman was kind enough to give her tips on how to strengthen her position in her job search. This is great example of how beneficial networking through LinkedIn can be. 2. Update your profile regularly: Update your profile in some way, or your status, at least once every 2 weeks. This shows you care about your networking efforts, and keeps your connections up to date about your career progression or possible requests you have you need assistance with. 3. It’s a two way street: Remember to not only ask for LinkedIn recommendations but also be willing to give them. You can use your LinkedIn recommendations on your resume, in your cover letter or on a job application; they are a very useful tool. Take the time to provide recommendations for others as well. 4. Only connect with people you know: This is the stated intent of LinkedIn, to only connect with people you know, and I say stick to it. It’s not a popularity contest. You want to feel comfortable connecting someone with another connection in your network and you’ll only feel comfortable doing so if you know them. 5. Participate in groups that are effective: There are a lot of LinkedIn groups available, some are better than others. The more active ones I find tend to be the most helpful where people are participating and providing helpful information and conversation. Don’t join too many and as a result get overwhelmed and not participate at all. Instead be choosy and participate. *Would you like more help with your job search?
