Find out how you know whether you should jump on the bandwagon or, stay away... Client Story to Help You Create Your Own I wanted to share this story with you regarding a group coaching client, LaToya. She was hesitant to put herself out there to conduct informational interviews about the career paths she is considering. She has been in the same industry for 10 years and, looking back, wonders why she has wasted so much time there. I encouraged her to step outside the box and start small with networking. She reached out to a fellow coaching group member and through talking with them, realized that working with a school admissions or alumni office was something she wanted to add to her career list. That one conversation gave her a more solid sense of career direction! Remember, networking pays off in many ways. A five minute conversation can change your life, giving you information that you would not have had otherwise. Good luck and I hope this is helpful to you! What you discover could be very revealing! Career Corner Social Resumes – Use them or lose them? With the increasing use of LinkedIn, Facebook and other social media sites and outlets, social resumes are becoming more and more acceptable. We’ve all heard stories in the media about job seekers who use creative methods for applying to jobs to gain the attention of employers and stand out. Social resumes whether it’s your LinkedIn profile, an online website you’ve created for yourself with your resume and qualifications or a YouTube video, are becoming more commonly used. But job seekers still often ask me about these – when it’s appropriate to use them, how to leverage them and whether to even bother creating something like this. The rules so to speak about social resumes are still being created. But the re are a few things you need to keep in mind if you’re considering using a tool like this in your job search. 1. Know your audience. Social resumes are more appropriate for some industries and less so for others. High tech industries like software development, web design, gaming and industries that utilize technology often are more likely to accept or even expect a social resume. For more traditional industries like banking, law or the medical field, you may want to think twice. There are no hard and fast rules here necessarily, just understand your audience first and what would be appropriate before you go diving in. 2. LinkedIn is a must. That said, you need to be on Linkedin regardless of your industry. Yes some use it more than others for their recruiting efforts however, Linkedin is becoming more and more of a standard and must have for anyone in a job search or looking to stay on top of their professional development. 3. Make it count. If you decide to create a social resume, regardless of what type it is, make it good. It must be perfect and very high quality in order to be effective. This is another way to put your best foot forward so you need to make it count. And if you can’t make it good, skip this step altogether. Stick with the more traditional route of a standard resume and find another way to stand out by creative techniques to follow up with the employer for example. 4. Use it strategically. Don’t just create a video, develop a website and slap it all together. Be thoughtful about the marketing package you’re creating to sell yourself. Create a plan, then implement it. How will each piece work together? Is a video just too much and unnecessary? Keep your video short and to the point. Be mindful of what you are creating and the message you want each piece to send.
