Here's to having a career you love, Hallie Crawford On a Personal Note Last month many of you viewed the photo shoot we did with our new little man Vaughn. Thanks for your well wishes and for commenting on the pics! It means a lot to me. I had a great time on maternity leave but I was also antsy to get back to work. Friends and family told me I was crazy to go back to work so early, and I wondered whether I was jumping back in too soon. What I've learned is that everyone's different and has different needs. While I am enjoying being a mom, my role as a coach is a huge part of who I am as a person and I don't want to set that aside for too long. Coaching is not just a job, it's my passion. So, not being in that role for too long is unfulfilling for me. Maybe I am trying to do too much, I'm not sure yet. What I do know is that coaching fulfills me and I am a better mom when I am fulfilled. What if your job was your passion, so much so that it didn't feel like work? How cool would tha t be! That's what I want for you. What's New and Coming Soon Identifying Your Purpose Coaching Group Not sure what your passion is? Find out how you can live your life with greater passion and purpose... I loved it's life lesson so wanted to share it with you. "How often do you let other people's nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, rude wait person, curt boss, or an insensitive employee ruin your day? Unless you're the Terminator, for an instant you're probably set back on your heels. However, the mark of a successful person is how quickly she/he can get back her focus on what's important. Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson. I learned it in the back of a New York City taxi cab. Here's what happened. I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car's back end by just inches! The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, whipped his head around and he started yelling bad words at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was friendly. So, I said, "Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!" And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, "The Law of the Garbage Truck." Some people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it. And if you let them, they'll dump it on you. When someone wants to dump on you, don't take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You'll be happy you did. How often do you let Garbage Trucks run right over you? And how often do you take the garbage and spread it to other people: at work, at home, on the streets? Make a commitment today to stop doing this. The bottom line is that successful people do not let Garbage Trucks take over their day. They take this in stride and move on to what's truly important in life. Imagine what would happen in your life, starting today, if you let more garbage trucks pass you by? Here's my bet. You'll be happier. Love the people who treat you right. Forget about (forgive) the ones who don't." Where's Hallie I was honored and excited to be featured in the Chicago Tribune last month, January 20, 2008. "Update wardrobe for job success: Look the part for job or interview" Career Corner Interview Tip - Beyond Basic Prep - Create Your Five Key Point Agenda You've heard this before - prepare for the interview. Research the company, find out who you're interviewing with, and review the typical interview questions people tend to ask. These are important and -- you should prepare further. Go beyond this basic interview prep. Here's how: Think about the 5 key points you want to get across during the interview. You may assume that the prospective employer runs the show during an interview. Most people think that's the case, but it's not 100% accurate. You get to drive the agenda of the meeting more than you think. Don't be passive about prepping for your interviews, trying to guess what they might ask you. Be pro-active and consider the 5 key things you want them to know about you! Write down the answers to the following questions: Why would you be the ideal candidate for the job? What are your best qualities and accomplishments that are relevant to this position? What unique talents and abilities do you bring to the table? Then be pro-active during the interview. Make sure you communicate your 5 key points by giving specific examples that illustrate each one. On the day of the interview, two things can potentially happen. One, the interviewer will ask you specific questions where you can simply "slant" your responses around the points you planned to mention. Or, two, you'll end up talking about other things - but when the time comes that they ask for your questions or thoughts, you can use this opportunity to make your points. Write them down and have them in front of you if you'd like. There's nothing wrong with that. Remember, the interview is a two way street. You are also interviewing them to make sure the job is the right fit for you. Go for it and good luck! Need help with your career transition? Contact me for support.
