Happy Fall and Halloween Isodifj,

Hope you are gearing up for Halloween and Fall. Vaughn has decided he’s going to be Captain America (but he calls it Captain American, it’s adorable.) And I am going to be a yellow M&M, oh joy :) It was a “this is an easy costume” decision.

Our latest 4 week “Ideal Career Intensive” group with Georgia Tech is going well, it started in September. I host a webinar with Vanderbilt University this Friday if you know anyone who’s an alum who may want to attend: http://www.vanderbilt.edu/alumni/career/careerevents.php.

Does this sound familiar? In This Issue: I was talking to a friend last week who likes his job (somewhat) but hates the company he works for. When I talked to him about making a change, he groaned and 1) started complaining about his company and 2) said they were forcing him to look for a new job (which he dreads doing) because their culture is so bad-he would stay if it were better. That may be true, the culture of your company may be bad, but his job search will fail if he continues to think like this!!! (I told him so, luckily he’s open to feedback). This month's Career Corner article will show you how to improve your search for your ideal career this fall.

Client Success Story to Help You Create Your Own:

I always ask potential clients what their commitment level is to achieving their career goals whether it's a transition, improving work performance or something else. If they don't say it's a 10, I push them on it because I know how hard you need to work to make a career change, and if they're not there yet in terms of commitment, the change may not work! At the same time, you have to realize that there's a leap of faith required in order to commit to your change. You don't know how long it will take, you don't know how you will make the change, but you just know that you want it. You have to take the step off the curb, into the unknown.

I wanted to share this with you because of a recent email I got from one of our career coaching clients who was hesitant at first to make the commitment to coaching. In the email they said, "Thanks again for your encouragement. I know when I first signed up, I didn't want to give a commitment, but I have since learned that your work is worth every penny!"

Two things for you to do today: 1) Gauge how committed you TRULY are, be honest, to your career transition? And 2) If it’s not at a 10, what needs to change to make it a 10?

3 Ways to Get Your Job Search On Track This Fall

Fall has arrived, and some of you might be getting ready for the change of season. What are the basics steps you take to get organized for the Fall? Maybe you're getting the kids back into a routine with school, preparing your yard for the winter, or starting to make arrangements for the holidays that are right around the corner. Even though you're busy getting your day-to-day life organized, you can't overlook your career transition. What steps have you taken to get organized for your job search?

Here are three basic tips to help you get ready for a new season in your career transition:

1. One of the most basic things I have my career coaching clients do right away to begin defining their dream job is to write a "Gotta Have" list. Spend a day at work with a small journal that you keep with you all day. Write down everything you LIKE about your job and everything you DISLIKE. At the end of the day from that list, define what you WANT to have in an ideal job on a separate piece of paper. Then prioritize those wants, and define those that you can't compromise on or that are "Gotta Have's".

2. You might be wondering, “Can I really put everything I truly want to have on my Gotta Have list?” Don’t be afraid to be too demanding, or afraid to have your head in the clouds. Having this huge list of things might feel unrealistic, but go ahead and put everything down now. You can always compromise later. Don't compromise up front because if you play small, you'll get small. If you dream big at the beginning you're more likely to get closer to what you want, than if you didn't. There's plenty of time for compromise later on, and you will. But you'll be closer to the dream than you would've been before.

3. People often obsess about their resume and cover letter. You have to pay attention to these things, but I recently spoke to a career coaching client and it reminded me again of how important it is to remain organized in your job search. We talked about creating a job search spreadsheet, because he hadn't done one yet. As a result, he had forgotten who he was supposed to follow up with and when. He became overwhelmed, therefore less effective, in his search. Don't let this be you! Sit down and get organized for your search if you haven't already. Then stay organized! Don't let it fall by the wayside. You could have the best resume ever, but if you don't send it out on time, it doesn't matter!
